Melissa MacAlpin

For the past 14 years, Melissa has been making books and comics.

Her work has been carried by Cosmic Comics, Forbidden Planet,Jim Hanley’s Universe, and Midtown Comics in New York City. She spends her time collecting stories from friends and acquaintances.

She reinterprets these stories into comics, drawings and paintings, offering her audience the opportunity to glimpse at the hidden moments of day-to-day life.

artist statement

In 1999, I saw a billboard posted on Broad Street in Philadelphia—an advertisement for a
Valentine's Day sale at a local shop. The billboard was beautiful; it was a Valentine's card
from a woman to an old sweetheart. She wrote about how she missed the relationship, how she
still thought about her lost love.

Every day I walked past that sign, I thought about the people I used to know. I thought
that most people must have done that—everyone traveling up and down Broad Street thinking
about the loves they missed. On their way to work or running errands, they lost sight of
their responsibilities and thought about another time with other people. I started talking
to people about their lost loves. I have collected stories from just about everywhere
that I have been.

My work starts in one way or another from these stories of lost loves.
